Self911

Privacy policy

Effective October 4, 2026

Self911 is operated by Brault & Barnes Design, LLC. This policy explains how Self911 handles information in the Self911 app, on self911.com, and through Self911 location sharing. Self911 provides location-based contact information. It does not dispatch responders, route emergency calls, or automatically transmit your location to a public safety answering point. In an emergency, call 911.

Information the app uses

Location and contact lookup

The app uses iPhone location services when you ask it to use your current location. You can also search for or enter another location. When you look up contacts and an internet connection is available, the app sends the selected latitude and longitude and requested service categories to the Self911 contact API. The selected location may be your current location or a place you entered for someone else.

Downloaded SpotName data can produce some location descriptions and contact results on your device. If the contact API is unavailable, the app can continue with usable contact data already downloaded for that location. Current or nearby contacts that are available only from the online service may be missing, and a location without usable downloaded contact data may not return contacts.

Apple Maps handles place searches, maps, and directions. Downloaded SpotName catalogs and location packs are delivered from Self911 storage hosted by DigitalOcean.

Live and static location sharing

Self911 does not start live sharing until you press Start. During an active live share, the service receives precise latitude and longitude, accuracy, time recorded, a geohash and readable location summary, the sharing mode and duration, and a random installation identifier stored in the app’s Keychain. This identifier is not Apple’s advertising identifier and is used for app functionality, not advertising or tracking.

A person with your share code or link can view the location you chose to share. Static share links contain location information in the link itself. Treat share codes and links as sensitive and send them only to people you trust. A viewer may optionally let their browser use their own location to calculate distance and direction on that device; Self911 does not intentionally send that viewer location to the Self911 server.

Contacts and information stored on your device

Saved locations, custom contacts, saved Self911 contacts, call notes, and share history are stored on your device. “Save to Contacts” opens Apple’s contact editor. If you use Speed Dial, Self911 asks for Contacts permission and reads or updates only the contact entries it created and tracks. Self911 preserves detected user edits and does not upload your address book.

Speed Dial background updates are optional and off until you enable them. If enabled, the feature requires Always location access and Background App Refresh. When iOS reports a significant location change, Self911 may send the device’s current latitude and longitude and the requested contact categories to the Self911 contact API, then update eligible Speed Dial entries created by Self911. This is not continuous location tracking, iOS controls when updates arrive, and Emergency PSAP contacts are excluded. Turning the feature off stops future background contact lookups but does not delete entries already saved in Apple Contacts.

Website information

If you join the launch waitlist, Self911 stores your email address, consent record, and limited rate-control information so it can send the requested launch notice and prevent abuse. If you report a data issue or request support, Self911 receives the information you submit. Web servers and infrastructure providers may also process ordinary request information such as IP address, time, requested page, browser details, and security events.

Issue reports and optional attachments

When reporting is available, the shared form receives the message, page, optional public contact identifier, and app and release details you review and explicitly submit. Prepared app details are limited to version, build, device family, operating system version, directory release, website version, and network connection status. The form does not automatically submit reports or attach your precise location, call notes, credentials, or raw logs.

Optional files are limited to JPEG or PNG screenshots and structured app details. Review screenshots for private information before sending. Reports and files are stored privately on Self911’s server and have no public download link. Submitted reports and attachments are kept for correction and support work until manually deleted. There is no automatic expiry. Screenshots are re-encoded to remove embedded metadata, and diagnostic files are limited to the listed app details.

Reports, messages, app details, public contact snapshots, receipts, file metadata, and attachments have no automatic deletion period. To request deletion, contact support with your report reference. Backup copies keep their existing retention.

Spam prevention uses hourly counters derived from the connection address with a keyed hash. Raw connection addresses are not stored in report receipts or these counters. Counters expire logically each hour and are replaced on the next report attempt. Hosting and security logs may still contain ordinary connection information.

How information is used

Self911 does not use your information for targeted advertising and does not sell it or share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

Service providers and external services

Self911 uses hosting, database, storage, and content-delivery providers to operate its services. Apple processes Apple Maps requests under Apple’s policies. The web location-share map uses OpenStreetMap tiles, so the tile service may receive the viewer’s IP address and tile requests. Directions may open Apple Maps or another map service chosen by the device. These services handle information under their own terms and privacy policies.

Retention and deletion

You can stop a live share in the app. Stopping removes the current coordinates and readable location summary from the active live-share database and revokes active viewer sessions. When an expired session is next processed by the service, the same active-location cleanup occurs; expiry should not be treated as guaranteed instant deletion. Self911 currently does not promise a fixed public deletion period for non-location session records, security logs, or backups, which may remain for operational, security, recovery, or legal needs.

You can remove saved app information in the app where controls are provided or delete the app to remove its local data. Contacts written to Apple Contacts remain there until you delete them. A recipient may retain information that you shared with them.

Your choices

You may deny or revoke Location or Contacts permission in iPhone Settings. You may use entered coordinates instead of Apple place search. You may choose not to start Live Share, stop it at any time, keep Live Share background updates off, and keep Speed Dial background updates off. For questions or a deletion request concerning information held by Self911, contact our monitored support mailbox at support@self911.com. Self911 may need enough information to locate and verify the relevant record.

Security, children, and changes

Self911 uses reasonable safeguards, but no networked service can guarantee absolute security. Do not use Self911 to share a location with someone you do not trust. If you believe a child provided personal information through Self911 without appropriate permission, contact support. This policy may change as the services develop; the effective date above will be updated when material changes are published.
